Talk Talk: The Colour of Spring 40th Anniversary Half-Speed Master
Forty years on from its original release, Talk Talk’s The Colour of Spring is getting the half-speed master treatment from Parlophone. This is the record that sits between the band’s pop origins and the radical experiments of Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock — the moment where Mark Hollis began pulling the songs apart and rebuilding them with far more space and texture than the format seemed to allow.
A half-speed master suits this record particularly well. The arrangements reward close listening, and the dynamic range that Hollis and Tim Friese-Greene built into the sessions has always been slightly compressed by standard cutting. Done properly, this pressing should open the album up in a way that makes a familiar record feel genuinely new.
