Afrodisiac 2026 Reissue — Afrodisiac by The Veldt Is Finally Back on Vinyl, With Another Edition Still to Come
Music On Vinyl are reissuing Afrodisiac by The Veldt on 2xLP, and for anyone who has spent years searching for a copy, this is the release you have been waiting for. Who The Veldt are
The Veldt were formed in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1986 by identical twin brothers Daniel Chavis on vocals and Danny Chavis on guitar. Their sound pulled from gospel, Motown and Pink Floyd long before shoegaze had a name, and that combination of deep soul roots run through waves of guitar texture is what still sets them apart from almost every other band working in the genre.
Capitol Records signed the group in 1989, and they spent the years that followed touring America with The Jesus and Mary Chain and the Cocteau Twins, with Cocteau Twins guitarist Robin Guthrie producing some of their earliest sessions. By the time Afrodisiac arrived in 1994, produced by Ray Shulman, the band had built a sound entirely their own. Pitchfork later named it among the best shoegaze albums ever made, and it remains one of the defining records of the era from a Black led band, something the Chavis brothers have spoken about openly over the years, and something that makes its long absence from vinyl feel like a real gap in the genre’s history rather than a minor one.
What is on this pressing
This edition spreads Afrodisiac across two LPs, giving the record proper room after decades of being nearly impossible to find on vinyl at all. It also carries two era defining remixes of Soul In A Jar, one from The Jesus and Mary Chain and one from hip hop producer Diamond D, both of which say a lot about how far this album’s reach went at the time it was made.
Two editions, two different stories
It is worth knowing there will end up being two versions of Afrodisiac on vinyl in the coming year, and they come from two different places.
This Music On Vinyl pressing is licensed through the catalog holder, which is how the majority of reissues happen, even for artists who are still active and still touring. Daniel Chavis addressed this directly, explaining that the release was “licensed through the proper channels, through the catalog holder,” and that this is standard practice for how reissues of this kind come together.
Separately, The Veldt are working on their own deluxe edition, expected next year, built with bonus tracks and new artwork made directly by the band. For collectors, that makes this a genuinely rare situation. You do not have to choose one over the other. This pressing gets Afrodisiac back into the world now, on a proper 2xLP, and the band’s own edition next year will be the version made by the people who wrote it, with material that has never been heard before.
