Methodrone by The Brian Jonestown Massacre — 2LP Reissue
The Brian Jonestown Massacre‘s 1995 debut Methodrone is back on wax, out 14th August on A Recordings as a 2LP. It is a long record, over seventy minutes, and it earns that length by going somewhere with it rather than simply accumulating.
The record pulls from Loop, Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine in roughly equal measure, which gives you a sense of the territory: fuzzed out guitar drone, repetition used as a structural tool rather than a shortcut, and the kind of low frequency weight that rewards a decent set of speakers.
Anton Newcombe went on to become extraordinarily prolific, and the BJM catalogue can be hard to navigate as a result. Methodrone is the right starting point, the record before the output became overwhelming. If you have been meaning to get into early BJM, this 2LP pressing from Resident Music is the moment to do it.
