Experimental vinyl
Experimental is our home for records that don't sit comfortably anywhere else: noise, drone, tape music, avant-garde rock and electronics that go somewhere unexpected. It overlaps with ambient, post-rock and noise rock, and some of the most adventurous records we cover end up here.
These are often the smallest pressings of all, sometimes only a few hundred copies, sold mostly direct by the label. Here's every experimental record we've covered, with its status and where to buy it at retail price.

Music that deliberately breaks with the usual rules of song, structure or sound: noise, drone, tape and sound collage, and avant-garde rock and electronics. On Surface Noise it's where records go when no other genre fits.
Pressings are often very small and sold mainly through the label's own store, so they can sell out before most shops stock them. Buying direct from the label is usually the best route.
Our experimental records link most often to Norman Records (UK), Piccadilly Records (UK) and Domino. Every buy link goes to the artist, the label or a record shop selling the record new, at retail price. See where to buy experimental vinyl →
