Nouvelle Vague reimagine Depeche Mode through bossa nova and jazz on A Date with Depeche Mode. Out 30 October on PIAS, pre-order now on black vinyl.
Nouvelle Vague built their reputation dismantling post punk with bossa nova and jazz arrangements, and now they have turned that same process on Depeche Mode. A Date with Depeche Mode is out 30th October on PIAS as a standard black vinyl LP, available to pre-order now from Rough Trade.
Thirteen tracks, covering Enjoy the Silence, Personal Jesus, Stripped, Just Can’t Get Enough and more, with guest vocalists including Skye Edwards of Morcheeba. Stripping the electronics from Depeche Mode sounds like it should not work, but Nouvelle Vague have made a career out of exactly this kind of unlikely recontextualisation, and it tends to.
The bossa nova and French pop lens they apply here is the same approach that made their early records genuinely surprising rather than just conceptually clever. On this label and with this cast of collaborators, the execution is unlikely to disappoint. Worth getting the pre-order in ahead of October.
