William Basinski returns with Passing the Cup of Sorrows, his first album in six years. Out 23 October on New Gamboge coloured vinyl via Temporary Residence Ltd.
William Basinski‘s first new album in six years is up for pre-order on Temporary Residence Ltd. Passing the Cup of Sorrows is built around a single forty-minute piece for solo piano and subtle electronics. The conceptual starting point is the idea of passing the cup of sorrows in past-life regression therapy — fitting territory for an artist whose work has long circled grief, decay and duration.
The record draws a clear line to Morton Feldman’s approach to asymmetrical patterning, though what Basinski does with it arrives somewhere that feels entirely his own. Slow, eerie, and quietly devastating in a way that his best work tends to be.

It is pressed on New Gamboge coloured vinyl and limited, with a two per customer cap in place. That restriction is there for a reason. Out 23rd October on Temporary Residence Ltd. — order direct from the label if you want it at the right price before it disappears.
