Bonnie “Prince” Billy has a live record coming on 18th September via Domino. Ghosts of American Psychonauts was recorded over Valentine’s Day weekend 2025 in Los Angeles, in the immediate aftermath of the fires, and that context is present in the way it feels. The setlist pulls from The Purple Bird alongside deeper cuts from across the wider Will Oldham songbook.
The backing band assembled for the sessions is a strong one: Emmett Kelly, Ryder McNair and Patrick Shiroishi are among those on the record. Dave Ferguson, who produced The Purple Bird, steps in to sing on “Downstream.” The record closes with a live version of “I See a Darkness,” which given where and when this was recorded feels like the whole evening building toward that single moment.
