Pixies are back in the wax: Bossanova & Trompe le Monde get the reissue they deserve
New 2026 remasters. Coloured vinyl. Unreleased tracks. And a pressing run short enough to make you nervous.
Forty years in, 4AD are releasing newly remastered editions of Bossanova (1990) and Trompe le Monde (1991), out September 11, 2026. Standard black vinyl, CD, and digital, yes. But the thing you actually need to know about? The Dinked International Editions. Two limited pressings, exclusive to a network of 50 independent record stores across the UK, Ireland, and the US, each one coming with a bonus 7-inch of previously unreleased tracks.
This is the kind of release Surface Noise exists for.
What you're actually getting
Dinked International Editions — at a glance
The Bossanova Dinked edition comes on oxblood vinyl with a 16-page, 10-inch replica of the original UK booklet — the one with the famously incorrect tracklisting. The bonus 7-inch features Dig for Fire (Albini Version), recorded during the Surfer Rosa sessions in late 1987, nearly three years before the version we all know, and Go Man Go, a Black Francis and Kim Deal co-write that both Pixies and The Breeders recorded but neither released. The Breeders' version surfaced in 2023. Now we get the Pixies version.
The Trompe le Monde Dinked edition lands on sky blue vinyl. Its bonus 7-inch contains Brackish Boy, better known from Frank Black's 1993 solo debut, but this is the original Pixies version, unheard until now and Punk Loop, previously unreleased. That's all we know. With Pixies, that's enough.
Both albums have been remastered by Kevin Vanbergen, who has been working through the band's tape archive for some time — the same person responsible for the Dolby Atmos mixes and high-res masters across their catalogue. One per customer. When they're gone, they're gone.
Why these records matter
Bossanova came out in 1990, a year after Doolittle had already made them one of the most important bands on the planet. Where Doolittle was aggressive and angular, Bossanova was something stranger — surf music, science fiction, and noise rock compressed into 38 minutes. Velouria. Dig for Fire. The Happening. No skips. Not one.
Trompe le Monde followed in 1991 and became, unintentionally, the last Pixies album before their original breakup. Fifteen tracks in 40 minutes. Kim Deal's final album with the band. Some of the best pure songwriting of Black Francis's career. Letter to Memphis. Planet of Sound. Motorway to Roswell. It's relentless and brilliant and it has aged perfectly.
I saw Pixies live for the first time in 2005 at a festival in the UK. The reunion. I wasn't prepared for what happened — the sheer volume of great songs, the crowd knowing every word, the pace of it. This was already fifteen years after these albums came out. Now we're thirty-five years on and they sound more urgent than most things released last week. That's not nostalgia. That's what happens when songs are built to last.
"These aren't just must-haves for Pixies fans. They're essential for anyone who cares about the lineage of indie music."
For the generation who was there in '90 and '91, these are the records that shaped everything that followed. For anyone discovering them now — and people are still discovering them — you're in for something.
What secondhand prices tell you
Current Discogs market prices
Pixies vinyl holds its value because people keep discovering these records and keep caring about them. Supply stays low. Demand doesn't go away. A Dinked Edition pressed in quantities this small, with four unreleased tracks on coloured wax? That lands on wantlists the day it's announced. The point isn't to buy these as investments — the point is that every previous limited pressing has proven that this audience is real and paying attention.
Where to preorder
Standard black vinyl and CD are available via the 4AD store. The Dinked International Editions are exclusive to participating independent stores — preorders are already moving and most stores are limiting to one copy per customer.
