Record Store Day · Guide

Missed it? What to do after Record Store Day

The short answer

Many shops put unsold Record Store Day copies on their websites the morning after, and the official RSD marketplace lists leftovers from lots of shops in one place. Check independent shops first, at retail price. Resale prices are usually highest in the first days, so wait before you pay a markup.

  1. The day: in shops only
  2. The next morning: shops list leftovers online
  3. The first week: official RSD marketplace and shop websites
  4. Weeks to months: RSD First titles may come to other shops
  5. One to three months: resale prices often settle

When leftovers go online

Most shops sell in person on the day, then list what’s left on their websites the next morning. Some go live early, so if a record matters to you, check first thing. A few shops keep leftovers in store for a while, and some sell them in other ways, so it’s worth asking your local shop how they do it.

Where to check first

Start with participating independent shops’ own websites, then the official RSD marketplace, which lets you search a title across lots of shops and pay once. Fans also share leftover finds in community threads the day after. Buy at retail price wherever you can. Treat resale sites as a last resort, not the first place you look.

RSD First titles can come back

If the record you missed is an RSD First, there’s a good chance it will reach other shops later. Exclusives are one-off editions, but the music sometimes comes back in another edition.

Why resale prices often fall

Prices are highest in the first days, when demand peaks and resellers are listing everything at once. Once that passes, and once shops’ leftovers are found, prices often settle much closer to retail. Fans regularly report finding records they missed for a fraction of the day-one asking price a few weeks or months later. That’s not guaranteed for every title, but it happens often enough that waiting is usually the better bet.

Our Vinyl Report found resellers asking an average of +473% over retail across 51 records, nearly six times what fans paid in the shop. Read the Vinyl Report →
