RSD First vs RSD Exclusive: what the categories mean
The short answer
An RSD Exclusive is only released physically through independent record shops. An RSD First is in independent shops first and may come to other shops later. Small run / regional titles are sold in particular regions or pressed in runs under 1,000. If you're short on time, put Exclusives and small runs first; RSD First titles can usually wait.
| Exclusive | RSD First | Small run / regional | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it’s sold | Independent shops only | Independent shops first | Particular regions or a small run |
| Can it come out again? | Not as this edition | May come to other shops later | Sometimes, rarely |
| Pre-order? | No | No, not for the RSD release | No |
| If you can only queue for a few | Prioritise | Can often wait | Prioritise, if it’s in your region |
RSD Exclusive
Exclusives are made for the event and sold through participating independent shops only. Most of the list falls into this category: on the RSD Black Friday 2026 list, 120 of 187 titles are Exclusives. That doesn’t make every one scarce. Pressing quantities run from a few hundred to more than ten thousand, so check the number too.
RSD First
RSD First titles go on sale in independent shops on the day, and may be released more widely afterwards. Fans’ advice is consistent: don’t stress about RSD First records. If you miss one, there’s a good chance it will be in other shops later in the year, often at a similar or lower price.
Small run / regional
These are titles pressed in runs under 1,000, or sold in particular regions only. They’re the hardest to find, and many shops get one copy or none. If one matters to you, ask your shop whether they’ve ordered it and get there early.
What this means for your list
Start with the records you’d want without the sticker. Then use the category and the quantity to decide where to spend your time on the day. An Exclusive with a small pressing is worth arriving early for. An RSD First with a few thousand copies can usually wait for the leftovers, or the wider release.
