Surface Noise Weekly: 4 July 2026
Issue 4 — July 2026
New vinyl you need to know about
The biggest post-rock announcement this week is The Ocean’s new album Solaris, their 12th studio record, due in September via Pelagic. Alongside that, The Sundays are getting their full catalogue back in print on vinyl for the first time in years, The Raveonettes’ Pretty In Black is back, and Dinosaur Jr. have finally announced a new album. There’s also a first-time-on-vinyl moment for the Pixies with Complete B-Sides: 1988-97, and Arab Strap’s Half-Told Tales is shaping up to be one of the more significant indie rock records of the year. Plenty to act on before resellers get there first.

SolarisThe Ocean Pelagic Records — 25th September 2026 — 2xLP (Gatefold, printed inner sleeves, poster) The Ocean’s 12th studio album arrives with a completely new lineup including two vocalists, contributions from Thorsten Quaeschning of Tangerine Dream on modular synths, and Simen Eifring of Norwegian post-rock act Spurv on trombone. Recorded at Hansa Studios Berlin, it’s their most ambitious record yet by some distance. If you’ve followed them since Precambrian, this is not one to sleep on — and the deluxe hardcover book edition will not hang around. |

Complete B-Sides: 1988-97 (Remastered)Pixies 4AD — Out Now — 2xLP (Black) / 2xLP (Clear) Originally a CD-only release from 2001, this is the first time these 19 classic-era b-sides have been pressed to vinyl. Remastered from the original analogue tapes by Kevin Vanbergen, and with a fourth side of bonus live tracks added, it’s a genuinely definitive edition. “Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf)” and “Into The White” on wax at last. Part of the band’s 40th anniversary run, and a companion to the forthcoming Bossanova and Trompe le Monde remasters due September 11th. |

Half-Told TalesArab Strap Rock Action — 4th September 2026 — 2xLP / 2xColoured LP / 2xSigned Coloured LP Recorded with Paul Savage (Mogwai, Belle and Sebastian, Franz Ferdinand), Arab Strap’s new album includes singles “You You You” and “Fighting For You”. Moffat and Middleton at their most sardonic, with one track described as a “disco-metal incantation”. Signed coloured copies are available from Piccadilly while stock allows — worth grabbing if you want something more than the standard pressing. |

Reading, Writing and Arithmetic / Blind / Static & SilenceThe Sundays Parlophone — August 2026 — LP (each album, standard black vinyl) All three Sundays albums are being repressed and available to preorder now. Reading, Writing and Arithmetic (1990) is one of the defining indie pop records of its era — “Here’s Where The Story Ends” alone justifies owning it on vinyl. Blind and Static & Silence complete the catalogue. None of these have been easy to find at a fair price for years. Order now rather than paying reseller rates in August. |

There NearDinosaur Jr. Jagjaguwar — 28th August 2026 — LP / Coloured LP / Signed Coloured LP The sixth album from the reunited Dinosaur Jr. trio since their return, and from the sound of lead single “Several Got Away” it very much roars from start to finish. Recorded at Amherst’s Bisquiteen Studio with J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph. Signed coloured copies are available from Piccadilly. Six years is a long enough wait. |

Pretty In Black (2026 Reissue)The Raveonettes Music On Vinyl — Available Now — LP (Coloured Vinyl) The Raveonettes’ 2005 second album gets a coloured vinyl reissue via Music On Vinyl. Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo at their most atmospheric, blending fifties-inflected rockabilly noise-pop with a thriller-movie unease. It’s been out of print at a fair price for a while — if shoegaze-adjacent noise pop is your thing, this one belongs in the collection. |
