Sick Gazelle is a post-rock project bringing together Bruce Lamont (Yakuza), Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) and Doug McCombs (Tortoise) — heavyweight names from three different corners of underground rock.
Sick Gazelle draws its members from bands that have each shaped a different strand of experimental and heavy underground music over the past three decades: Bruce Lamont's work with Yakuza sits at the intersection of metal and free jazz, Steve Shelley's decades in Sonic Youth make him one of the most recognisable drummers in American noise-rock, and Doug McCombs' basslines with Tortoise helped define post-rock's more groove-driven, exploratory side. As a combined project, Sick Gazelle leans into expansive, slow-building post-rock — patient rather than explosive, with the pedigree of its members audible in the confidence of the playing rather than any single member dominating. It's a project for listeners who want the current lineage of American post-rock traced through the people who helped invent it.
